About Jo:
I grew up in a very old, drafty farmhouse in a small New Hampshire town. My family had lots of animals while I was growing up: Dogs, cats, chickens, two ponies and three horses. My favorite pet was my pony, Smoky. He was already quite old when we adopted him, but he was a good sport about going to 4-H shows with me. I won a blue ribbon in my first ever show—the immensely challenging “Walk/Trot.” That show was a thrilling experience for both of us! Smoky lived to be over 30 years old. He was a good friend, even if he was stubborn and would only trot when heading back toward the barn. See more here. |

Maria Padian
About Maria:
I was born in New York City but moved with my family when I was five to "the country." Back in those days (the 1960s) that meant New Jersey. We moved to a blue house on an acre of land in a little town called Allendale, and to a city kid like me it felt ... wild. At night, instead of car horns and sirens, all you could hear were crickets. Deer often wandered through our yard, and when I saw my first earthworm I was absolutely convinced it was a snake. There was a huge woods behind our house, and my brother and I were allowed to wander there, for hours, and build forts. It was a great place to be a kid. See more here. |

Sharon G. Flake
About Sharon:
Words don’t always spill out of my brain and onto the page as easily as people may think. I write about African-American youth. I take on tough topics and shine light onto people and places that society doesn’t always care to see. I’m an inner city baby at heart, and communities like the one I grew up in shall forever remain in my blood. Voices from those communities can be heard in my novels. The challenges some of those teens face show up as well, along with their determination, ingenuity, and wit. See more here. |

Mitali Perkins
About Mitali:
Who In The World Is Mitali Perkins? That's a good question. I've been trying to figure it out myself, spending most of my life crossing borders. I was born Mitali Bose in Kolkata (Calcutta), India, and always tried to live up to my name—which means “friendly” in the Bangla language. I had to! Because my family moved so much, it was the only way I could make new friends. By the time I was 11, I'd lived in Ghana, Cameroon, London, New York and Mexico before settling in California just in time for middle school. Yep, I was the new kid again, in seventh grade, the year everybody barely makes it through. |

Ellen Hopkins
About Ellen:
BORN: March 26, 1955 in Long Beach, CA. I was adopted at birth by an older couple. Albert C. Wagner was 72 at the time; Valeria was 42. To put that into perspective, he was born in 1883 and she was born in 1912. GREW UP: in Palm Springs, CA, in a neighborhood with movie stars and entertainment icons, including Elvis Presley, Bob Hope, Kirk Douglas and Arnold Palmer. We were, however, the “poor rich.” My father made his money in the steel industry in WWII. I remember the day he had actually earned his million. As a poor immigrant child who was most definitely a self-made man with a 6th grade education, he couldn’t have been prouder. See more here. |
